The fortieth and final adhyāya of the Vājasaneyi Saṃhitā is the ĪŚĀVĀSYA UPANIṢAD — the only Upaniṣad that is not appended to a Veda but stands INSIDE one, as its closing chapter. It is the first of the principal Upaniṣads in every traditional list, and it takes its name from its first two words. After thirty-nine adhyāyas of offerings, bricks and salutations, the book turns and says: all this is clothed by the Lord; enjoy by renouncing; covet no one's wealth. Then it holds together the two things everyone else separates — action and knowledge, the manifest and the unmanifest — and refuses to let go of either. Ten of its eighteen mantras follow.
