What this chapter covers | The paribhāṣā chapter lays the arithmetic foundation of the whole book: the names of the decimal places (units, tens, hundreds … up to 10^17) and the units of money, weight and measure, then the parikarmāṣṭaka — the eight fundamental operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide, square, square-root, cube, cube-root). The same eight operations are given for fractions (bhinna-parikarma), and Bhāskara states the rules of zero and confronts division by zero, naming its result khahara. A few worked examples and a knowledge check follow.
