कुट्टक · Chapter Overview

From Līlāvatī, taught by Acharya T Krishnatrey. This lesson is free to read.

What this chapter covers | The kuṭṭaka ("pulverizer") is the Līlāvatī's most advanced arithmetic: a method for whole-number (integer) solutions of equations like ax ± c = by — what today we call linear Diophantine equations. It "pulverises" the numbers by repeated division (essentially the Euclidean algorithm) until the remainder is one, and it was essential to astronomy for finding when planetary cycles coincide. A knowledge check follows.
