Its verses give four tests of a place worth living in — respect, livelihood, kin, and access to learning (1.8); climb the ladder of sacrifice from the individual up to the Self, for whom one should renounce the whole earth (3.10); and warn never to abandon the certain to chase the uncertain, lest you lose both (1.13).</pre>
