<pre data-block="statement">What this chapter covers | Chapter 3 answers the three questions (tri-praśna): which way is which, where am I, and what time is it. All three are read from the shadow of a single vertical stick. On a water-levelled surface the astronomer draws a circle and sets a standard 12-aṅgula gnomon (śaṅku) at its centre; the two points where the shadow-tip crosses the circle fix the exact east–west line, and from the shadow the text derives true directions, latitude, and local time.</pre>
