Chapters 4–5 compute lunar and solar eclipses from the real sizes and distances of the bodies, beginning with the diameters of the Sun and Moon and the earth's shadow. A lunar eclipse looks the same to everyone, but a solar eclipse does not: because the Moon is near, its apparent position shifts with the observer, so the text introduces parallax (lambana in longitude, nati in latitude) and pins down exactly where each component vanishes.</pre>
