Centuries before Copernicus, chapter 12 states plainly that the earth is a globe (mahī-gola) floating in space, that "up" and "down" are only local, and that the round earth looks flat merely because we are so small beside it — even reinterpreting mythic Meru as the earth's polar axis. Chapter 13 then tells the student to BUILD the heavens: a wooden earth-globe and an armillary sphere (gola-yantra), because you understand the sky by making a model of it.</pre>
