<pre data-block="statement">What this canto covers | The Eighth Canto is a canto of avatāras and rescues. Its heart is GAJENDRA-MOKṢA — the elephant-king, seized by a crocodile, who cries out to God and is saved the moment he stops relying on his own strength. We read his great prayer (8.3.2, 8.3.17, 8.3.20–21). The canto also tells of the churning of the ocean of milk, and Vāmana, the dwarf-avatāra who humbles Bali.</pre>
