What this adhyāya covers | It begins with the contest of the vital powers, in which PRĀṆA (breath / life) is shown to be "the eldest and the best" — when it leaves, all else fails. It then teaches the PAÑCĀGNI-VIDYĀ, the "five fires", the Upaniṣad's account of how the soul travels and is reborn — a clear early statement of karma and rebirth: good conduct leads to a good birth, wrong conduct to a low one. The chapter closes with the VAIŚVĀNARA-vidyā, the search for the universal Self present in all.
