<pre data-block="statement">What this adhyāya covers | The summit of the Chāndogya and of Vedānta. The sage UDDĀLAKA ĀRUṆI teaches his proud son ŚVETAKETU the "one thing by which all is known". Through the analogies of clay, gold and iron he shows that all forms are but names, while the substance is real; he declares "in the beginning, Being alone was — one, without a second"; and nine times over he distils the whole into three immortal words: **Tat tvam asi — That thou art.**</pre>
