What this chapter covers | The Gītikāpāda (13 verses) is the PRELIMINARY foundation. It opens with the invocation that names the book's plan (Gītikā 1), gives Āryabhaṭa's unique ALPHABETIC number-code for writing huge numbers in verse (Gītikā 2), records the great cycles of cosmic time and the revolution-counts of the planets in a mahāyuga, and — most famously — encodes the world's first TABLE OF SINES (jyā). Everything the later pādas compute rests on these foundations. A few of its verses follow as examples.
