It defines the divisions of time from the vast mahāyuga (which Āryabhaṭa uniquely splits into four EQUAL quarters) down to the day and hour, computes the MEAN longitudes of the Sun, Moon and planets from the Gītikā revolution-counts, fixes the order of the planets, and gives the rules of intercalation (adhimāsa) that keep the luni-solar calendar true.
