It works confidently with positive and negative quantities (dhana/ṛṇa), surds, and equations in one and several unknowns, building on Brahmagupta. We read its rule of signs, its treatment of the unknown (yāvat-tāvat), and its luminous verse on khahara — division by zero as the infinite — and meet the cakravāla ("cyclic") method that solves Nx² + 1 = y² five centuries before Europe.</pre>
