What this chapter covers | The second pāda (55 sūtras) is the PRACTICE. It opens with kriyā-yoga — discipline, self-study, surrender (2.1–2) — and diagnoses suffering: the five afflictions (kleśas) rooted in ignorance (avidyā, 2.3–11) and the workings of karma (2.12–14). It teaches that future suffering can be prevented (2.16) through discrimination (viveka, 2.26–28), then unfolds the heart of the book: the EIGHT LIMBS of yoga (aṣṭāṅga, 2.29) — the ethical restraints (yamas) and observances (niyamas) with their fruits (2.30–45), and the first outer practices of posture, breath and sense-withdrawal (āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra, 2.46–55). A few key sūtras follow as examples.
