🕉️ This is the crown of the Taittirīya Saṃhitā — and, for millions, the crown of the Vedas themselves. Kāṇḍa 4 is the book of the Agnicayana, the piling of the great fire-altar. It opens (4.1) with the Manas meditation — yuñjānaḥ prathamaṃ manaḥ, "first yoking the mind" — and the Savitṛ prayer for purified intention, then consecrates the waters with Āpo hi ṣṭhā (4.1.5). Then come the two liturgies the world knows. TS 4.5 is the ŚATARUDRĪYA — the Śrī Rudram (Namakam), the great litany of salutation to Rudra: "namas te rudra manyave" — and, at 4.5.8, the earliest scriptural home of नमः शिवाय. And TS 4.7 is the CHAMAKAM (Vasoḥ-dhārā), the answering litany of asking: "vājaś ca me, prasavaś ca me…" — "and to me sustenance, and to me impulse…" Together they form the great pair still chanted daily in temples and homes: first salute, then ask. Thirteen of this kāṇḍa's mantras follow.
