The Bhāgavata — the Ripe Fruit of the Vedic Tree

The **Śrīmad Bhāgavata Mahāpurāṇa** is the crown-jewel of the eighteen Purāṇas — 18,000 verses in **twelve skandhas (cantos)**, traditionally ascribed to **Vyāsa** and spoken by his son **Śuka** to the dying King **Parīkṣit** in his last seven days. It is the great scripture of **bhakti**, devotion to Bhagavān, moving from the definition of the highest dharma, through creation and the great devotees, to the beloved life of **Śrī Kṛṣṇa** and liberation through love of God. <pre data-block="quote">"Drink again and again, O connoisseurs, the Bhāgavata — the ripened fruit of the desire-tree of the Vedas, fallen from the lips of Śuka, mingled with nectar." — Bhāgavata Purāṇa 1.1.3</pre>
