The Chāndogya Upaniṣad — the Great Song of the Sāmaveda

The **Chāndogya Upaniṣad** is one of the oldest, largest and most influential of the principal Upaniṣads — belonging to the **Sāmaveda**, the Veda of chant (*chandas*). In **eight adhyāyas (chapters)** it moves from meditation on the sacred syllable **OM** as the Udgītha, through great teaching-dialogues, to the summit of Vedānta itself: Uddālaka's instruction to his son Śvetaketu, **"Tat tvam asi — That thou art."** Its verses are among the most quoted in all of Indian philosophy. <pre data-block="quote">"All this is verily Brahman." — Chāndogya Upaniṣad 3.14.1 (Śāṇḍilya's teaching)</pre>
