The **Charaka Saṃhitā** is the foundational treatise of **Āyurveda**, the Indian *science of life (āyur-veda)*. Descending from the sage **Ātreya Punarvasu**, redacted by **Agniveśa** and revised by **Charaka**, it is the great text of Indian **internal medicine (kāya-cikitsā)** — a complete system of health, diagnosis and healing built on careful observation, reason and compassion, arranged in **eight sthānas (sections)**. <pre data-block="quote">"The physician who enters the science of life for the good of all beings, and not for wealth or fame, surpasses all." — the spirit of the Charaka oath</pre>
