The Siddhānta Śiromaṇi — Crown of Treatises

From The Siddhānta Śiromaṇi, taught by Acharya T Krishnatrey. This lesson is free to read.

In **1150 CE**, at the age of thirty-six, **Bhāskarācārya (Bhāskara II)** completed the **Siddhānta Śiromaṇi** — the "Crown of Treatises," the summit of classical Indian mathematical astronomy. In four books it moves from arithmetic to algebra to the motion of the planets to the sphere of the heavens — and along the way states the **attractive force of the Earth five centuries before Newton**, and reasons about **infinity** and **instantaneous motion** with startling depth. <pre data-block="quote">"The Earth draws all heavy things toward itself by its own force; so they seem to fall." — Bhāskarācārya, Golādhyāya, c. 1150 CE</pre>
