Welcome · The Shortest Upaniṣad, the Whole of Vedānta

From The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad, taught by Acharya T Krishnatrey. This lesson is free to read.

🕉️ The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad is the shortest of the principal Upaniṣads — just twelve mantras of the Atharvaveda — yet the tradition holds it to contain the essence of them all. An old verse (the Muktikā) declares that for liberation the Māṇḍūkya alone is enough; if that does not suffice, study the ten; if not, the hundred and eight. In these twelve lines the sages compress the entire teaching: OM is everything; "this Self is Brahman" (ayam ātmā brahma); consciousness has four states — waking, dream, deep sleep, and a tranquil Fourth; and the sacred syllable A-U-M-silence is the very map of the Self. This course reads all twelve mantras, one by one, in authentic Sanskrit — with translation, word-by-word meaning, and honest commentary — so a beginner can hold the whole text in the hand.
