<pre data-block="research">Historians of mathematics recognise the Śulba Sūtras as containing the earliest known GENERAL statement of the "Pythagorean" theorem (Baudhāyana, ~800 BCE), an excellent √2 approximation accurate to five decimals, Pythagorean triples, and sophisticated area-transformations and circle-squaring. They are studied as a genuine, independent geometric tradition — applied mathematics of a very high order arising from Vedic ritual, and a foundation stone of the later classical Indian mathematics of Āryabhaṭa and Bhāskara.</pre>
